Lima, Jun. 17 (ANDINA).- The United Nations special rapporteur on human rights and fundamental rights of indigenous peoples, James Anaya, highlighted the Peruvian government and Congress efforts to address real problems in Amazon communities.

“It is essential to discuss substantive issues; I am proud of the steps the government has taken up to now. I came here to get more information about this. I am interested to know which short term measures the government seeks to implement.”

Anaya met this morning with members of the Congress Multi-Party commission, responsible for studying and recommending solutions to problems affecting indigenous people.

The UN official visits Peru in response to an invitation extended by the Government and the Congressional commission. His visit was also prompted by his deep concern over the clashes that left 33 dead (24 policemen and 9 civilians) in the town of Bagua.

According to the UN rapporteur, his stay in Peru will not interfere in the country’s internal matters.

“I am here to understand and support the UN human rights system, I am interested to know the facts, and promise to tell the whole truth,” he added.
