Always obscured by the fame of Cusco, its more glamorous sister, Chincheros (sometimes spelled ‘Chinchero’) is one of the prettiest mountain resorts in Peru. It is located in the heart of the Andes mountain range, at an elevation of 9000 feet above sea level. The town has a lovely colonial church, a market and a couple of bars that make it an ideal escape from the touristy trails of Cusco. The snowy peaks of the Andes beckon you to think about mountaineering or at least, to plan a hike in the mountains.
This graceful and traditional Andean town is the perfect antidote to those who are tired of the dusty and often raucous towns and villages of Peru. Just as colorful as its noisier neighbors are, Chincheros is subdued, calm and evokes a mysterious and languid atmosphere around it. The town is also known for its Sunday artisans’ market and Inca ruins.
It is probably one of the best places to find out where your heart truly lies: in the big city or on top of a mountain in the Andes. It can be a spiritual experience of sort, where you can discover if you want to run away from the rat race and stay on top of a mountain or just spend a couple of days, rejuvenate yourself and return to the daily humdrum.
