Experience Amazon Rain-forest in Iquitos, Peru


If you are a jungle lover, Iquitos is the best city to travel to in Peru. Iquitos is the gateway to Amazon Basin and is the largest city in the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest.  The Peruvian Amazon has a rich flora and fauna with over 2000 species of fish, 4000 species of birds found in their natural habitats. Pink dolphins and piranhas are easily located outside Iquitos.

Iquitos is located in northeastern Peru and is the capital city of Maynas province and Loreto region. It is also the sixth most populous city in Peru. The city is surrounded by Port of Iquitos which is formed of Amazon, Nanay and Itaya rivers. Another well-known fact about Iquitos is that it is the largest city in the world inaccessible by road. You may either fly or take a boat to get there.

There are a number of beautifully located forest lodges in the thick foliage of forest both in and around Iquitos that offers splendid views to visitors.  The place is sequestered in wraps of eternal peace with the only sound of birds, monkeys and insects. A boat trip down the Amazon River is great fun. It is an amazing trip to encounter palm trees, exotic fruits, and be in awe of rich biodiversity of the surrounding area.

You can also take ride in canoes by small rivers and water-channels.  Many lodges offer you a facility to stay with the native communities to experience the local culture. You are also offered night expeditions and carry out sport fishing sessions. For visitors who want to learn more about the forest can visit investigation laboratories, orchid nurseries, ethno-botanical medicinal plant garden, and many other such places.

Iquitos has a lot more to offer beyond the charm of Amazonian rainforest. Belen is one such place not to be missed. It is a shanty town where houses are built on balsa rafts and they float up or down depending upon water level in the river. It is the most interesting village in the world considering that it always stays afloat.  Its thriving nightlife and markets are much talked about.
