Biography

Francisco José Lombardi (also known as 'Pancho' Lombardi) was born in Tacna, Peru on August 3rd 1947. His early schooling was conducted in his hometown, and he went to high school at the Colegio de La Inmaculada de Lima, where he published his first movie reviews in the school magazine Cine Estudio. This brought him into contact with the group editor of the film criticism magazine Hablemos de Cine, in which he published several critical texts. He then studied at the Film School of the University de Litoral in Santa Fe, Argentina until the university was taken over by the Onganía military government during the Argentine Revolution. He returned to Peru and studied film at the University of Lima.

In 1974 he began making short films after founding Producciones Inca Films with Jose Rey de Castro Zavala. His short films include Al otro lado de la luz (The Far Side of Light), Tiempo de Espera (Timeout) and Callejón Oscuro (Dark Alley). He was also the producer of short films by Augusto Tamayo, Aldo Salvini, Paul Guevara, Augusto Cabada, Lucho Barrios, among other directors. In 1977 his debut feature film, Muerte al amanecer (Death at Dawn) was a commercial and critical success, and allowed him to quickly follow up by directing a section of the film Cuentos inmorales (Immoral Tales) (1978). Since then Lombardi has directed films continuously, many of them co-produced with Spain and with Gerardo Herrero as producer.

In 2003 he split with Producciones Inca Films and thereafter worked independently. His work in film has been recognized through tributes and retrospectives at various international Film Festivals, including festivals in La Habana, Freiburg, Huesca and Trieste. In 2002 the Lima Film Festival awarded the Spondylus, the highest honor at the event, in recognition of his career as a filmmaker. In 2004, Lombardi was awarded the 'Irene Diamond Lifetime Achievement Award' given annually by Human Rights Watch for "his extraordinary commitment to human rights in film." He also received the Pablo Neruda Medal of the Order of Merit, awarded by the National Council for Culture and Arts of Chile for "his outstanding contribution to film and Latin American culture."

In recent years he has also entered the world of theater direction, staging four plays to date with marked success. In 2008 won the awards given annually by the newspaper El Comercio for "Best play of the year" and "Best Director" in theater.

Outside of his cultural work, Lombardi was President of the Sporting Cristal football club from 1993 to 1997[1] when the team won the Peruvian Primera División three years in a row (1994-95-96) and played in the final of the Copa Libertadores America in 1997. In 2003 he was elected Vice President of the Federación Peruana (the governing body of football in Peru), a position he resigned in 2005 after helping to establish the Under-17s World Cup and the Copa America.[2]

In 2005 Lombardi was a member of the jury at the Mar del Plata International Film Festival in Argentina. [3]
