Girls of Cusco
  • Globalteer: is a UK registered non profit charity that serves to help those in need. They place volunteers overseas to work with projects that need your help. The Peru Kids project is based in the magnificent city of Cusco, the oldest continually inhabited city in South America and the staging post for Machu Picchu. The project includes orphanages, a free education programme, library, community and vulnerable children support. The project focuses on the young and vulnerable to assist them in finding a way out of the trap of poverty by providing their current nutritional needs and to support them in their education so that they can become contributing members to their families and society.
- Projects:
  1. Orphanages and vulnerable children: volunteers assist the local staff to teach Spanish or English. Play sports, arts and fun activities, teach the children vocational skills. Manual work to improve the orphanage, painting, decorating, gardening.
  2. Community library: volunteers read with the children, assist with homework, organise games and fun activities for the children, teach, assist local staff, manual work improving the project facilities.
  3. Vocational Training: volunteers teach using their own particular skills.
  4. Community support: volunteers take a unique experience of travelling into the Peruvian countryside with Globlateer to support the children.
- Schedule: A normal day at the projects is about 5 hours. Times vary according to the projects but a typical day might be from 9am to 12pm in the morning and then 2pm to 4pm in the afternoon.
- Length of Stay: Minimum stay is one week and maximum 3 months. If volunteers wish to stay longer than 3 months, they can normally offer an extension once they are in Peru and they can see they work well with the projects.
- Donation: see weekly pricelist on website; donation includes an airport pickup, accommodation (with all the services outlined above) project and Peru orientation, in-country support from their Volunteer Coordinator and the donation that goes direct to the project where volunteers are working. The donation also pays for teaching materials at the projects and other resources for learning activities and sports. They also organise and pay for excursions for the volunteers and children.
- Accommodation: private room accommodation in a new 3 star hotel is included in the donation. The hotel is well situated about a 15 minute walk from the main square. Rooms are single occupancy or can be shared if volunteers are traveling together. The rooms are clean and comfortable, each with private toilet, shower and some with bath tub. The facilities include hot water, cable TV, free breakfast, restaurant, bar, room service, laundry, internet access, safe deposit box and CCTV security.
- Food: Breakfast is included. Other meals are not included but they give advice on arrival regarding the best places to eat and where to find good quality meals at very low prices.
