- Karikuy: The Organization behind the Perupedia website.
- - What is Perupedia?: Perupedia is an encyclopedia whose goal it is to have the most extensive data base regarding Peru and its culture in the internet. This ultimate reference of Peru will have it's place on the Internet as the most thorough database on Peru and has the opportunity of becoming a focal point on attracting more attention to the social and political issues that affect the country. The program has only been running for the past 3 months but it already has more than 3.000 articles about different topics. The Perupedia Project is financed by the Karikuy organization which provides low-cost trips to international travelers. The profits of Karikuy help to pay for social programs like Perupedia. Volunteers will receive discounted rates on Karikuy tours and services.
- - Volunteer's work: The voluntary work basically consists of doing field work and exploring the country to gather information for the Perupedia Project. Volunteers who come to Karikuy investigate about a chosen topic/topics and publish them on the Perupedia website. Also:
- - Web site layout
- - Photo editing
- - Blogging
- - Video editing (not part of job requirement)
- - Minor Maintenance (mostly personal cleaning, painting, etc.)
- - Requirements:
- - open-minded people who like to do research on their own
- - Spanish is not a requirement (but it helps to gather information or interview people) since the website is in English
- - Positive Attitude
- - Social Skills
- - Writing Experience
- - Effective Team Member
- - Knowledge of simple HTML and data entry
- - Must own Personal Laptop
- - Own Photo Camera
- - Goal Oriented
- - A Plus, but Not Required: Knowledge of CSS and Dreamweaver, Video Editing Skills, Multilingual, Tour Guide Experience, Knowledge of Twiki software
- - Benefit for Volunteer:
- - affordable $50 a week, includes meals and lodging w/ cable, internet & hot water.
- - you will live with a Peruvian family and therefore learn a lot about the Peruvian culture (let it be dancing, soccer, cuisine etc)
- - Length of stay/Schedule: minimum: 1 month (but negotiable); working schedule: Monday through Friday, usually 8 hours/day
